Rondorlando
This joyful overture resulted from an initiative of Dr. Richard Greenwood of the University of Central Florida. He brought together a four band consortium to commission a seven minute work.
Orlando Concert Band – director, Richard Greenwood
Scott County High School Symphonic Winds – director, Tom Brawner
University High School Symphonic Band – director, Philip Obado
Winter Park High School Wind Ensemble – director, Joel Moody
Since its initial performance was due to take place as part of a programme entitled 'Song and Dance' I decided this work needed to contain elements of both song and dance. And since I was (and still am) feeling very much at home in Orlando I wanted it to be a kind of tribute to my adopted city – hence the title!
The music is constructed in a fairly simple rondo form, with an exuberant trumpet tune built over a 7/8 ostinato, and a quirky 2nd theme and a songlike third both in 2/4.
The premiere, in St. Luke's Church Oviedo on Janury 19, 2008 earned a rapturous response. Three other very successful perfomances followed in that year alone.
